Supervised Consumption Service (SCS)

SCS Program Visual.png

Supervised Consumption Services (SCS) are located in the George Spady Society Centre and shares space with the Medical Detox Unit.  The SCS save lives and benefits communities by providing a safe, clean space for people to bring their own drugs to use, in the presence of trained staff. This prevents accidental overdoses and reduces the spread of blood borne illnesses. The SCS offers a wide range of evidence-based harm reduction practices including important health and social services such as access to recovery and treatment services for those who are ready.

The emphasis at SCS is on the stabilization and restoration of clients’ health in an accepting and nonjudgmental atmosphere. We believe that people have the right to be treated with respect and dignity, and we help individuals who use drugs overcome the stigma and barriers that keep them from accessing recovery services.

Services provided:

  • 24/7 access for safe injection materials in a secure setting

  • Onsite RN, LPN and support staff to reduce health risks, overdoses, and to build relationships to support the people who need it most

  • Referrals to wrap-around services such as shelter accommodation, detoxification services, treatment, addiction and mental health services, housing, opiate replacement therapy, counselling advocacy, and both primary and secondary healthcare

Community commitment:

The George Spady Society Supervised Consumption Service is dedicated to being a responsible resident in our community. To learn about that commitment, explore the latest version of our Good Neighbor Agreement (2024) and review our last Community Engagement Meeting Minutes (March, 2024).

To let us know about a concern, please email us at Communty.Engagement@spady.ab.ca or call 780-920-1475. Please allow 24 hours for a response to your inquiry.

Updates to Building

October 2022, a security and screening gate was installed around the entrance to the SCS which is located at the south-west corner of the building. This gate provides a layer of security and is equipped with a camera and intercom for screening purposes.
